Lenevo Unveils the World’s First Laptop With a Transparent Screen

Posted on : April 19, 2024

Pushing boundaries with a forward-thinking proof of concept

Lenovo has shown off a cool idea called the ThinkBook. It’s like a laptop, but it has a large see-through 17-inch transparent display, utilizing a transparent panel

and a touch keyboard that can also be used for drawing. This idea is part of Lenovo’s new stuff they talked about at a big tech event called the Mobile World Congress held on February 26th, 2024 (MWC 2024)  in Barcelona, Spain.

This kind of see-through screen technology is becoming real, not just in movies. Lenovo’s ThinkBook is supposed to help people who use laptops be more creative and get stuff done better, especially when they’re on the go.

What is the transparent display concept? It’s a microLED display, according to Lenovo. They thought of this panel because it boasts vibrant colors, and contrast, and can shine bright up to 1,000 nits. MicroLED is expected to offer excellent image quality compared to OLED  the other transparent display technology, and it might even have the ability to adjust its transparency in the future.

Lenovo explains, “The transparency feature allows it to blend naturally into its surroundings.” This helps the users to smoothly switch between typing and sketching with a supported pen, making creativity flow more effortlessly.

In a statement, Lenovo highlighted the versatility of the ThinkBook Transparent Display, suggesting that creative professionals like architects and artists, could benefit greatly from its unique capabilities. The seamless integration of the transparent display into its environment enables effortless switching between typing on the touch keyboard and sketching with a compatible pen, unlocking new levels of creative efficiency.

This innovation represents a significant step forward in the world of portable productivity and creativity tools. With its futuristic design and advanced features, the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop Concept paves the way for a new era of innovation and inspiration in the tech industry.

Here are three main highlights of the transparent display laptop:

  1. Transparent Display Technology:
    • The laptop’s transparent display is made possible by Micro-LED technology. Unlike traditional screens, this one offers 55% transparency, allowing users to peer through it as if looking through a window.
    • The display’s high color saturation, exceptional contrast ratio, and brightness of up to 1,000 nits contribute to its impressive image quality.
  2. Augmented Reality Applications:
    • The transparent design enables exciting augmented reality (AR) applications. Users can interact with physical objects placed behind the screen while overlaying relevant digital information.
    • Imagine architects sketching real-world environments visible through the display or artists seamlessly integrating their surroundings into their creative work.
  3. Virtual Keyboard and AI Camera:
    • The laptop features a virtual keyboard that doubles as a drawing surface when used with a stylus. As the stylus approaches, the keyboard disappears, transforming into a flat sketchpad.
    • An AI camera positioned below the hinge identifies objects behind the screen and overlays related digital information. This integration enhances productivity and creativity.

Essentially, Lenovo’s see-through laptop concept tests the boundaries of what screens can achieve. Even though it’s just a preview of what’s to come, it makes us wonder how clean screens will affect the way we use computers.
